The Division of Acute Care Surgery is organized into the Sections of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute/Emergency General Surgery. There are 16 surgeons and 17 ACPs in the Division. Trauma and Surgical Critical Care services are performed at Carolinas Medical Center – a 874 bed, tertiary/quaternary care hospital, ACS-verified Level I trauma center in the Carolinas HealthCare System. It serves as the University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Charlotte Campus and the lead institution for the regional Metrolina Trauma Advisory Committee (MTAC). The F. H. "Sammy" Ross Trauma Center at Carolinas Medical Center is the busiest in the state of North Carolina, with more than 5,100 trauma code activations and 4,700 adult trauma admissions annually. It is the 6th highest trauma volume hospital in the United States. Pediatric trauma care at the Levine Children's Hospital is an integral part of the trauma program. The 234-bed Levine’s Children’s Hospital, located on the campus of the Carolinas Medical Center, is an ACS-verified Level II pediatric trauma center.
